Tunaweza: Women Rising with Hope and Resilience in Taita Taveta

This week, the Neema Weaving & Poultry Women Group from Taita Taveta County, Coast Region, radiated hope and determination during a meeting with the Waweza Team. The women shared their inspiring journey of weaving beautiful baskets from locally available materials and launching a poultry farming project to create more stable and reliable income streams for their families.

Despite facing significant challenges — prolonged drought, failed maize harvests, and economic uncertainty — their resilience continues to shine. They have refused to give up. Instead, they are innovating, diversifying their livelihoods, and supporting one another as a united group.

During the meeting, their voices rose in the powerful song “Tunaweza” — meaning “We are able.” The song became more than music; it was a declaration of strength and possibility. It reminded us that underserved communities, especially women and girls, can thrive when connected to the right opportunities, networks, and support systems.

The group is now exploring expanded markets for their baskets and seeking capital to grow their poultry enterprise. They are also encouraging their youth to enroll in the Waweza Skills Pathway Program database to unlock career growth opportunities.

Dear friends, with love, join Waweza — and be the “rain” that revives hope in their journey.
